There be is used to indicate if something exists.

É usado para indicar que algo existe.

There is a student in the classroom.

Há um aluno na sala de aula.

There are 10 students in the classroom.

Há 10 alunos na sala de aula.

There is = singular

There are = plural

Countable nouns X Uncountable nouns

Substantivos contáveis X Substantivos incontáveis

Countable nouns: we can use one / two / three (etc.). We can count them.

Substantivos contáveis: nós podemos usar números com eles. Nós podemos contá-los.

One car, two cars, three cars, four cars, ..., twenty cars.

Um carro, dois carros, três carros, quatro carros, ... , vinte carros.

Car = countable noun

A car = um carro

Nós podemos usar os artigos indefinidos (A / AN) com palavras contáveis no singular.

A boy, an apple, an egg, a bike.

Um menino, uma maçã, um ovo, uma bicicleta.

Uncountable nouns: Substantivos incontáveis:

We cannot say one / two / three (etc.). Não podemos usar números com eles.

We cannot use a / an + uncountable noun. Não podemos usar A / AN com um substantivo incontável.

We cannot count them. Não podemos contá-los.

NO PLURAL FORM. Sem forma no plural.

Money, milk, water, juice, tea, sugar, salt (etc.)

Dinheiro, leite, água, suco, chá, açúcar, sal, etc.

QUANTIFIERS

SOME = algum, alguma, alguns, algumas, um pouco de.

Affirmative sentences = frases afirmativas

We use "some" before countable and uncountable nouns.

Nós usamos "some" antes de substantivos contáveis e incontáveis.

There is some water.

Water = uncountable noun (substantivo incontável)

There are some bananas.

Bananas = countable noun (substantivo contável)

ANY = algum, alguma, alguns, algumas; qualquer; nenhum, nenhuma.

Negative sentences and questions = Frases negativas e perguntas.

We use "any" before countable and uncountable nouns.

Nós usamos "any" antes de substantivos contáveis e incontáveis.

There isn't any water.

Water = uncountable noun

There aren't any bananas.

Bananas = countable noun

Is there any water in the fridge?

Water = uncountable noun

Are there any bananas?

Bananas = uncountable noun
